Manuel Feller: "I cried every day"
Being separated from his children is not easy for the Austrian ski star. Why he even tried to distance himself at times:
Austrian ski star Manuel Feller knows the feeling of being separated from his family for extended periods.
During the season or pre-season training, the 33-year-old Tyrolean sometimes doesn't see his two children for several weeks.
When his children cry on the phone because their dad isn't home, it "really hurts," as Feller reveals in the podcast "Papa Mia!?".
Contact intentionally avoided
For this reason, he sometimes actively avoided contact with home. "I sometimes didn't call at all." This, in a way, caused him to lose touch with his children and his wife – something he regrets today.
Feller sees clear parallels to his own childhood. That's another reason why he can easily empathize with his children's pain. "When I was ten years old and spoke on the phone with my parents, I cried every day," said the world-class slalom skier.
Feller is currently preparing for the upcoming World Cup winter, where he wants to prove himself once again. He ended last season prematurely after the Olympic Games in March, partly to undergo back surgery.
