Two Medals at Junior World Championships: Ski Talent Announces Retirement
The Italian announces the end of her career during preparations for the new ski season. Three years ago, she was still racking up medals at the Junior World Championships.
Alice Calaba is ending her active career as a ski racer at just 24 years old.
Just three years ago, the Italian won two medals at the Junior Ski World Championships in St. Anton. She secured bronze in the Super-G behind Lara Colturi and Stefani Grob, finishing ahead of today's top racer Emma Aicher. She also earned bronze in the Team Combined event.
However, just a few weeks later, a severe setback occurred: Calaba tore her cruciate ligament in her knee during a crash. She had to wait more than two and a half years for her comeback.
After the Comeback Came the End
Since the Italian was dropped from the national team, she was forced to fight her way through on her own. She persevered for half a year in FIS races and the Europa Cup (33 races). Now, Calaba is calling it quits.
"They were intense and lively years. I am leaving this small but great world full of gratitude and look forward to discovering new worlds," she wrote on Instagram.
