Dropped from Squad: World Cup Downhill Skier Reacts with Retirement
The 32-year-old would have had to finance the upcoming Ski World Cup season himself.
After more than ten years in the Alpine Ski World Cup, Marco Pfiffner is bringing his active skiing career to an end this summer.
As the 32-year-old speed specialist from Liechtenstein confirmed to the newspaper "Vaterland", he has ended his career.
It was a decision that was not easy for him, but which was also influenced by accompanying circumstances. Pfiffner was notably dropped from Liechtenstein's squad for the upcoming season.
Would Have Had to Finance Everything Himself
This would have meant that the downhill skier would have had to shoulder the financing for the upcoming winter alone. However, this will now not happen.
Pfiffner started in 62 World Cup races; his best results were two 27th places – achieved in the downhill races in Kitzbühel (2023) and Val Gardena (2024). In addition, the Liechtensteiner participated in six World Championships and four Olympic Games.
With Nico Gauer, another World Cup racer from Liechtenstein has already announced his retirement this year.
