Alcaraz and Serena Williams Make US Open Comeback
Just days before the start of the singles tournament, Carlos Alcaraz returned to the big stage. In the mixed doubles event, he reached the quarter-finals.
There was a double comeback in the mixed doubles event at this year's US Open.
After several months out with injury, Carlos Alcaraz celebrated his return. Partnering with the legendary Serena Williams, 21 years his senior, he reached the quarter-finals.
It was also a comeback for Williams in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 23-time Grand Slam champion made her return in June after retiring in 2022. Unlike in Wimbledon, she did not receive a wildcard for the singles at the US Open.
Loss to Big Names
The mixed doubles event is contested in a shortened and condensed format over three days. A set is played to just four games. If tied at 3-3, play continues to five games; at 4-4, a tie-break is played.
In the first round, the star pairing secured a 5:3, 4:1 victory against Erin Routcliffe and Lloyd Glasspool. Shortly thereafter, however, they lost to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli 4:5 and 1:4.
Four pairings are in the semi-finals – packed with prominent names and current singles stars. Bencic/Cobolli will face married couple Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina. Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik will play against Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev.
The winning duo will receive prize money worth one million Euros.
