US Open: Brilliant Tagger falls to last year's finalist

Lilli Tagger has been eliminated in the second round of the US Open.

The 18-year-old from Tyrol challenged favorite Amanda Anisimova (USA/WTA-10th) but ultimately had to concede defeat with a score of 3:6, 6:3, and 1:6.

The match started perfectly for the player from East Tyrol, who immediately broke the American's first serve and pulled ahead to 2:0. However, the local favorite then found her rhythm, secured two breaks of her own, and served out the set 6:3.

In the second set, Tagger immediately dropped her first service game, but then played brilliantly: First, she managed the re-break for 2:2, shortly thereafter she also broke the world number ten's serve for 4:2, and sensationally took the second set 6:3.

After that, Anisimova played brilliantly again, and despite fierce resistance, the favorite pulled ahead to 5:0. After just over two hours, the 25-year-old converted her first match point for a 1:6 finish.

This means there will be no all-Austrian Tennis Federation (ÖTV) duel with Anastasia Potapova, who will now face Anisimova in the third round in Flushing Meadows.
