Despite wobble: Potapova reaches US Open third round

Anastasia Potapova has advanced to the third round of the US Open.

The 25-year-old prevailed in three sets in her second appearance at Flushing Meadows, defeating Leolia Jeanjean (WTA No. 127) with a score of 6:4, 2:6, 6:3.

In the first set against the Frenchwoman, Potapova secured an immediate break in the opening game, but had her serve broken at 3-3. At 4-4, the Russian-born player broke her opponent's serve again and then served out the set.

The second set, however, was a close contest for a long time before Potapova dropped her serve to go down 2-4. The Austrian then lost her rhythm, and the Frenchwoman secured another break to take the set 6-2.

Potapova fights back in the deciding set

In the third set, the Austrian ace recovered, again breaking Jeanjean's opening service game to pull ahead 2-0, but shortly after conceded the break back at 2-2.

A hard-fought game at 4-3 proved decisive, with Potapova converting her fourth break point. In the end, she also managed to secure the break to make it 6-3.

An all-Austrian clash could now occur in the third round. For that to happen, however, Lilli Tagger would have to eliminate last year's finalist, tenth seed Amanda Anisimova (USA).
