US Open: Victory for Joel Schwärzler in First Qualifying Round
The 20-year-old successfully starts his qualification for the major tournament.
Joel Schwärzler defeats Brazilian Gustavo Heide (ATP-128) in the first qualifying round of the US Open. The Austrian tennis youngster wins 2:6, 6:4, 6:4.
Schwärzler, currently ranked 171st in the world, immediately dropped his serve in the first game and subsequently conceded another break. Both players then held serve confidently. Schwärzler was unable to convert two break chances at 0:3.
Schwärzler started the second set better. He immediately broke Heide in his first service game, but the Brazilian was able to get revenge at 3:1. Schwärzler created two set points, both of which Heide saved. With his third chance, the 20-year-old then leveled the match in sets.
Schwärzler Stays Cool
In the decisive third set, both players performed confidently, with two break chances for Schwärzler at 2:1 remaining unutilized. Only in the final game of the match did a break provide the decision: Schwärzler converted his second match point and triumphed after 2 hours and 15 minutes.
