Austria's Davis Cup Opponent in US Open Quarter-finals
Despite physical complaints, the Belgian continues his Grand Slam run and makes history for his home country.
Alexander Blockx is in the quarter-finals of the US Open.
The 21-year-old defeated Argentine Francisco Cerundolo (ATP No. 25) 6:3, 4:6, 7:5, 7:5. The Antwerp native has never advanced this far at a Grand Slam tournament. At the US Open, he is the first Belgian to reach the quarter-finals.
Blockx, however, clearly struggled with his fitness. In the second set, the Belgian had to take a medical timeout, during which he received treatment on the right side of his upper body. His thigh also seemed to be in pain.
Heading to the Davis Cup with confidence
The Belgian tennis team thus arrives in Vienna in top form for the Davis Cup clash against Austria (September 18/19). In addition to Blockx, Zizou Bergs (ATP No. 37), among others, is also part of the Belgian squad. He was only eliminated in the third round in New York.
With this success, Blockx takes a big step in the world rankings. After the US Open, he will be at least 26th in the ATP world rankings, a new personal best.
In the quarter-finals, he will face Karen Khachanov (ATP No. 50) on Wednesday evening (CET)
