Emotional Moment in the Stadthalle: Cobolli forced to retire
The clash between the two Italians ends prematurely. Cobolli leaves the court in tears.
On Thursday, two Italians, Flavio Cobolli (ATP-6.) and Matteo Berrettini (ATP-48.), faced each other in the final round of 16 clash at the Erste Bank Open. The two have been friends since childhood.
However, the match will not be decided on sporting merit. As Cobolli, who is still in the race for a spot at the ATP Finals in Turin, is forced to retire.
Emotional Moment in the Stadthalle
Berrettini was leading 5-2 in the first set when the players were due to change ends. However, Cobolli remained seated on the bench with his towel over his head and burst into tears. Berrettini sat down next to Cobolli and comforted him.
To the applause of the fans, Cobolli finally left the Centre Court of the Wiener Stadthalle. The exact reason for his retirement is currently unknown.
Berrettini will now face Australian Alex de Minaur (ATP-10.) in the quarter-finals.
