New World No. 1! Zverev in Vienna Quarterfinals
The German wins the duel against Tallon Griekspoor and thus climbs to the top of the ATP world rankings.
Germany's tennis ace Alexander Zverev advances to the quarterfinals at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
The two-time Grand Slam champion prevailed on Thursday at the ATP 500 event in the Stadthalle against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (ATP-50) with a 6:4, 7:5 victory.
This means Zverev will be ranked as the world No. 1 in the ATP rankings for the first time on Monday – as the second German professional after Boris Becker.
Zverev converts first match point
The Hamburg native started the match with a break and subsequently served out for the set.
The second set was evenly balanced for a long time, until Zverev secured the decisive break for a 6:5 lead.
The 29-year-old finally converted his first match point, allowing him to celebrate reaching the quarterfinals and being crowned the new world No. 1.
In the quarterfinals in Vienna, the German will now face Britain's Arthur Fery (ATP-35).
