First Match as World No. 1: Zverev Stumbles in Paris
The German loses to an Italian in the second round of the Paris Masters. This marks a defeat in his first match as world number one.
For Alexander Zverev, his first match as world number one went anything but according to plan.
The German lost in the round of 32 at the Paris Masters 1000 event, which he won two years ago, against Italian Lorenzo Musetti with 6:7 (5) and 2:6.
Musetti thus becomes only the fifth male professional in tennis history to defeat an opponent in their first match as world number one.
Now Eyeing ATP Finals
Before the tournament, Zverev had stated that the fatigue that had accompanied him through the competitions in Asia was no longer an issue. The early exit is now a severe setback for the 29-year-old.
Next up for him are the ATP Finals, which begin on November 15. Afterwards, Zverev will also compete with Germany in the Davis Cup and participate in the Six-Kings-Slam exhibition tournament in Saudi Arabia.
