Ex-Wimbledon Finalist Kyrgios Tests Positive for Cocaine
The test came back positive during a doping control in Mallorca. The Australian himself made it official.
Australian tennis professional Nick Kyrgios causes the next scandal.
As the 31-year-old himself announced via "Instagram" on Wednesday, he tested positive for the illegal drug cocaine around the ATP tournament in Mallorca at the end of June.
"I want you to hear it from me first. I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. I made a big mistake and take full responsibility for it," Kyrgios writes in a long statement.
"I felt alone"
"I won't make any excuses, but I want to give some context. The past years full of injuries have taken a heavy toll on me, physically and mentally. My body couldn't execute what my mind wanted, and facing the end of my tennis career was harder than I thought," continued the 32-year-old, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2022.
"Letting go of something that has been a big part of my life is one of the hardest things I've ever faced. At times I've felt alone and helpless," writes Kyrgios, who last played at an exhibition tournament in mid-July.
The former world number 13 has been provisionally suspended since August 4th but can still appeal, according to the "International Tennis Integrity Agency". However, this has not yet happened. As long as Kyrgios is suspended, he is not allowed to participate in, play, or be present at any tour events.
