Rodionov Loses in Gstaad Despite Set Lead
The Lower Austrian was on track to celebrate his first ATP main draw victory since 2024. Ultimately, he loses in three sets.
After Joel Schwärzler, Jurij Rodionov also fails in the first round of the ATP 250 tournament in Gstaad.
The Lower Austrian loses in Switzerland despite a set lead, 6:4, 5:7, 4:6 against French qualifier Clement Tabur (ATP-178).
The 27-year-old must therefore continue to wait for his first victory in an ATP main draw since April 2024. Back then, Rodionov defeated Australian Aleksandar Vukic in Munich, and was eliminated in the second round against Alexander Zverev.
Set Lead Squandered
The first set in Gstaad still goes according to plan. A single break to make it 2:1 is enough for Rodionov to secure the set.
For a long time, set number two headed towards a tie-break, with both players not allowing a single break chance. Until 5:6, where Tabur immediately uses his first opportunity at advantage to level the sets.
Third Match Point Converts
In the third set, Rodionov concedes a break to make it 1:3, but immediately reacts and gets the re-break. At 3:4, the ÖTV Davis Cup player successfully fends off three break points at 0:40, but faces the next critical situation at 4:5.
On his own serve, the Lower Austrian successfully saves two of Tabur's match points, but the Frenchman, ranked 35 places behind Rodionov in the world rankings, does not let the third chance for victory slip away.
Consequently, no Austrians are left in the singles draw in Gstaad.
