Daniil Medvedev was disqualified on Monday in the Beijing semi-final against Novak Djokovic.
The Russian hit a ball that had bounced off the wall behind him back into the crowd with a backhand, hitting a spectator in the eye.
Djokovic reacted with shock >>>
Medvedev's reaction was swift: The Russian apologized. He stated he did not intentionally hit the ball into the crowd.
Medvedev: "I felt terrible"
"I am terribly sorry for the spectator. I am trying to get in touch with him, if he wishes," said Medvedev, who wants to apologize personally.
He said he tried to hit the ball away somehow so it wouldn't fly out of the court. "When I saw what had happened, I felt terrible."
Medvedev knows the strict rules and did not protest the disqualification at all. All his points and prize money will also be forfeited.
