Carlos Alcaraz benefits from opponent's retirement in Tokyo
The Spaniard fought hard against Denis Shapovalov in the first set, but the second set didn't last long.
Tennis superstar Carlos Alcaraz has reached the semifinals of the ATP 500 hard court tournament in Tokyo.
However, the world No. 3 benefits from the retirement of his opponent Denis Shapovalov (CAN/ATP-46) on Sunday, with the score at 7:6(3), 2:1 in Alcaraz's favor.
The first set was very hard-fought with three breaks on both sides, but in the end, the 23-year-old Spaniard had luck on his side in the tie-break. In the second set, Shapovalov had to receive early treatment for groin problems and retired shortly after.
In the battle for a spot in the final, Alcaraz will now face his older compatriot Jaume Munar (ATP-64).
