Injured! Struggling Buccaneers Fear for Their Quarterback
Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand in the match against the Minnesota Vikings. The results of an MRI examination are still pending.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are fearing for their quarterback.
In the 16-23 loss against the Minnesota Vikings – their third in a row – Baker Mayfield suffered a thumb injury.
"He dislocated his thumb. He will undergo an MRI on Monday to see exactly what's damaged inside," said coach Todd Bowles after the match.
For the Bucs, Mayfield's potential injury, who recently agreed to a three-year, $165 million contract extension, comes at an already precarious time.
With the 16-23 loss to Minnesota, Tampa Bay started an NFL season with three losses for the first time since 2014.
Will a Rookie Step In?
If the 31-year-old were to be sidelined, rookie Jalon Daniels would likely have to step in for the upcoming game against the Packers. Daniels already saw action in the last series against the Vikings after Mayfield's injury. He would then be on the field as a starter in the NFL for the first time.
"We haven't really dealt with that yet. We'll see what the MRI says, and then we'll talk among ourselves and see. But right now, Jalon would probably play," Bowles said.
