MotoGP: Heavy Bagnaia crash as Marquez wins
The Spaniard celebrates his tenth Sprint win of the season. An initial diagnosis has already been made for Bagnaia.
Marc Marquez triumphed in the Qatar Sprint, but the race was overshadowed by a heavy crash involving Bagnaia.
He crashed heavily at the end of the first lap after Aldeguer made contact with his rear wheel. The injured rider had to be transported off the track following the incident, though he remained conscious. As a consequence, Aldeguer was handed two Long Lap penalties.
A ten-lap restart followed, after which Marquez claimed his tenth Sprint victory of the season. The podium was completed by Di Giannantonio (+0.862) and Martin (+1.519).
In the World Championship standings, the Spaniard now holds a 49-point lead over Saturday's third-place finisher. He already has the chance to seal his next title on Sunday.
However, to secure the title on Sunday, the Spaniard would need to win with Martin failing to score a point.
Initial diagnosis for Bagnaia
Shortly after the race ended, Bagnaia's team released an initial statement. "Initial medical examinations revealed two fractures in his right foot, specifically to the fourth and fifth metatarsals," Motorsport-Total quoted MotoGP Medical Director Dr. Charte as saying.
Further examinations will follow, with the rider being transferred to hospital in Doha.
