First World Championship double since 2020! "I am proud of the team"
For Mercedes, the race in Brazil was actually a mixed bag. Nevertheless, Toto Wolff and co. can already celebrate their second World Championship title.
Now the celebrations can finally begin in earnest!
Just one week after Kimi Antonelli's historic Drivers' Championship title, Mercedes have also secured the Constructors' title. This means the "Silver Arrows" have won the team standings for the first time since 2021.
Furthermore, for the first time since Lewis Hamilton's last World Championship title six years ago, Toto Wolff and co. have clinched both World Championship titles in a single season.
Wolff delighted: "Not many teams achieve that!"
Naturally, the joy is particularly great for Toto Wolff himself. Even before the start of the season, the "Silver Arrows" were considered the big favorites for the championship titles.
Mercedes underlined this eight months ago at the season opener in Australia. The team kicked off the new era featuring V6 turbo engines and energy management in perfect style with a one-two finish. Only after several races did the competition close in on the "Silver Arrows," but in the end, the title victory was commandingly earned.
"We had a very strong start to the season. But the last few races have been very challenging," said the Mercedes Team Principal following the title win in Brazil.
Twelve victories and an Italian champion in "silver"
Although Russell was initially considered the clear favorite in the intra-team duel and celebrated victory in Melbourne, Antonelli's dominant performance ultimately turned it into a one-sided title race.
In contrast to the fiercely contested battles between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg ten years ago, these circumstances gave Toto Wolff and Mercedes far fewer headaches during the season.
"I am proud of the whole team. It took a few years to get back to the top. Not many teams manage that. It shows the great work being done here," the Viennese added.
Despite a rather botched race in Brazil following Antonelli's spin in the Senna S on slick tires and Russell's spin in the pit exit, Mercedes have already celebrated 12 victories in 19 races so far.
Whether Mercedes will be able to celebrate both championship titles quite so comfortably next year remains doubtful, however.
