Alonso leaves future open: "No hurry" with future decision

Fernando Alonso is taking his time to decide on his future for 2027. The 45-year-old Aston Martin driver stated on Thursday before the Spanish Grand Prix that competing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) instead of Formula 1 is an option.

The two-time world champion does not seem to be fully enjoying his current Formula 1 stint, as Aston Martin continues to struggle and new regulations reduce the importance of driver input. "It's about understanding how the rules from next year will affect racing and driving," Alonso said.

"Not the best cars to enjoy"

"The current cars, as I've often said, are not the best cars to drive and enjoy. But next year, hopefully, there will be a step in the right direction. At the same time, I have to consider what the best programme for next year is and sit down with the team. Whether behind the wheel or in another role where I can help the most, that will be the most important thing we decide together."

Alonso did not elaborate on the "other role" he might take on next season. When asked if participating in the WEC sports car series was an option, the Spaniard promptly replied "Yes".

Criticism of new vehicles

Drivers complain about the current cars' dependence on electric power and the compromises this forces drivers to make on track. Max Verstappen even stated earlier this year that he had considered leaving Formula 1 if no changes were made.

Formula 1 announced in June that it would transition to more engine power and less electric hybrid power from next year.

Alonso described his "best day of the year so far" as when he recently drove an older McLaren car in Barcelona. "You know, I drove cars without batteries, without anything," he said. "I only had petrol, tires, a lot of noise, a lot of videos, earplugs, simply incredible."

Return to Madrid

Alonso has scored only three points in 13 races this season, his best result being a ninth-place finish in the Netherlands in August. Alonso won three Formula 1 races in Spain during his career, twice in Barcelona and once in Valencia.

However, he knows that he will start in Madrid – which returns to the Formula 1 calendar after 45 years – without the prospect of another victory. "That won't happen this year," he said.

"Yes, we are aware of that and will work to put together a more competitive package and have that opportunity in the future."
