Engine Regulations 2030: Formula 1 Rejects Naturally Aspirated Engines
Nostalgia buffs will be disappointed, as the next generation of engines will not bring back the old Formula 1 sound.
It is still to be formulated in its entirety, but initial details for the new engine regulations for the next cycle starting in 2030 in Formula 1 now seem to be set.
While engine displacement will significantly increase again from the current 1.6 litres to 3.0 litres, the fundamental formula with turbo-assisted V8 engines remains.
The electrical components will be downsized, expected to deliver only 100kW of additional energy instead of the current 350kW. The entire power unit will be simplified and its weight reduced by at least 50 kilograms. The use of a "push-to-pass" system is under discussion.
Too Loud for Street Circuits
Thus, the shrill engine sound that characterized Formula 1 from the early 1990s to the early 2010s will not make a comeback.
Aside from the lack of relevance for manufacturers' series development, there are also practical reasons: many of the street races that now fill the calendar have regulations regarding noise emissions.
Details and final approval, as well as the exact introduction date, are still subject to further negotiations. As it stands, the current engine formula, active since 2026, would remain valid until and including 2031.
