Haudum, Baumgartner, Rohrer: Why the top line is being split up

The trio created plenty of chances in the 0-3 loss against Germany, but they are still being separated. Here is what Bader and Baumgartner had to say:

Austria's 0-3 defeat against hosts Germany to open the Deutschland Cup in Düsseldorf was not only a blueprint of the World Championship loss, but there were also a few bright spots.

The nominally second forward line with Lukas Haudum, Benjamin Baumgartner, and Vinzenz Rohrer stood out for Team Austria. The trio put the German defense under pressure and created numerous chances, but failed to find the back of the net.

However, as early as Friday evening, head coach Roger Bader mused out loud about breaking up this line again for the upcoming two games against Slovakia (Saturday, 3:00 p.m.) and Latvia (Sunday, 11:00 a.m.).

His explanation: "All three are players who like to have the puck. But there's only one puck."

New formations

At Friday's practice, it became clear that the Swiss coach had put his thoughts into action.

Haudum centered a line alongside former 99ers teammate Paul Huber and Henrik Neubauer of Black Wings Linz. Bader had already considered playing the Finland-based forward in his natural center position before the start of the tournament.

Baumgartner and Rohrer were kept together on a line, joined by VSV forward Maximilian Rebernig, who did not feature against Germany.

Ich habe die Linie extrem geil gefunden. (...) Ich finde es etwas schade, weil es so Spaß gemacht hat, aber ich verstehe es.

The changes are also intended to spread scoring more evenly across multiple lines. Bader's summary after training: "That looked quite good."

Baumgartner: "I think it's a bit of a shame..."

Baumgartner can understand the head coach's decision, especially with an eye on experimenting and testing different combinations ahead of the 2027 World Championship.

Nevertheless, he noted: "I thought the line was awesome. We're good skaters, we want the puck, and we can score goals. We created a lot of chances. I think it's a bit of a shame because it was so much fun, but I understand it."

New defensive pairings as well

Pairings are changing in defense as well.

Captain Clemens Unterweger was paired with Niklas Würschl, while his former partner Philipp Wimmer played alongside Thimo Nickl. Luis Lindner, who had a strong game against the DEB team, also trained alongside Nickl, but will not play against Slovakia.

Dominic Hackl and David Maier remained unchanged, while Patrick Söllinger moved alongside Paul Stapelfeldt.

Florian Vorauer is set to start in goal against Slovakia, while Nicolas Wieser will get the final game against Latvia.
