Salzburg wins thrilling clash with Capitals
Two strong goaltenders ensured that despite numerous shots on goal, only three goals were scored. The "Eisbullen" withstood several phases of Viennese pressure.
On Gameday 16 of the win2day ICE Hockey League, EC Red Bull Salzburg defeated the Vienna Capitals 2-1.
The "Eisbullen" immediately capitalized on their first power play to take the lead. Scott Kosmachuk was in the penalty box for tripping when Salzburg defenseman Dennis Robertson grabbed the puck and drove it centrally towards the net.
All the Viennese players anticipated a pass, but Robertson kept the puck, beating goalie Adam Reideborn for the 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of play.
Viennese Onslaught Continues
The Capitals appeared largely unfazed by this deficit and ramped up their offensive efforts. By the start of the second period at the latest, it was almost exclusively Vienna playing in attack.
Midway through the middle period, the Viennese believed they had succeeded, but Dominic Hackl's goal was disallowed after a challenge by Salzburg due to an offside call on assist-provider Jakob Lilja.
The Capitals finally managed their long-deserved equalizer during their own power play. Konstantin Komarek buried his one-timer for the 1-1 goal (37th min./PP), marking his first goal for the Capitals since returning home from Sweden last summer.
Rattie Crowned Match-Winner
The final period developed into a high-tempo, open exchange of blows.
Ty Rattie scored the decisive goal, leaving Lorenz Lindner standing and ultimately deking around Caps goalie Reideborn (44th min.). Vienna's spirited final offensive push remained unrewarded, as Salzburg saw out the 2-1 victory after 60 minutes.
With this home win, Salzburg increased their points total to 25 and climbed to sixth place in the standings, while the Capitals remained stuck in ninth position with 20 points.
