Three goals in 71 seconds: Satisfying CHL finish for 99ers
The reigning ICE champion celebrates their first victory on the final matchday and even finishes the premier class as the best Austrian team.
The Graz99ers bid farewell to the Champions Hockey League with heads held high.
The reigning champions of the win2day ICE Hockey League celebrate a 6:3 victory against Norwegian champions Storhamar on the final matchday of the league phase.
After five consecutive defeats in the premier class, Coach Dan Lacroix's team thus collects three points at the end.
Triple strike within 71 seconds
The Styrians lay the foundation with a triple strike in the first period.
After an assist from Vela, Conley finishes through the legs of ex-Capitals goalie Parks (11.). 46 seconds later, Currie carries the puck into the offensive zone, passes back to Hanus, who beats Parks with a shot through his body after a few strides (12.).
Another 25 seconds pass until Collins ploughs through the Norwegian defense and beats Parks over his left shoulder (12.). The US goalie is substituted after three goals conceded within 71 seconds.
Graz extends lead
In the middle period, the goal tally is further increased.
Wittwer beats de Vries through the pads for a 4:0 lead (27.). It is the young Swiss's first goal for the 99ers. Subsequently, Captain Schiechl makes it 5:0 after a great combination and an optimal pass from Maier (36.).
Krupic puts the Norwegians on the scoreboard for the first time 66 seconds later (38./PP), but before the second intermission, Conley restores the old lead with his second goal (40.).
Graz gives up Red Lantern
While the final period belongs to the Norwegians, who also score twice through Sandnes (46.) and Lilleberg (55.), the Graz victory is ultimately never threatened.
With this three-point win, they can still relinquish the Red Lantern; ultimately, Graz will even finish the CHL season as the best Austrian team in 20th place.
