Germany apparently wants to host a World Cup again.

This comes from a report by "The Athletic". According to one of the leading DFB officials, Germany is therefore considered one of the top candidates for hosting in 2042 - or even as early as 2038.

As DFL official Axel Hellmann told the American medium, Germany possesses "the complete infrastructure for everything that is needed."

The problem with the rotation principle

If FIFA's current regulations remain in place, Germany could only bid again in 2042 at the earliest. The reason for this is the rotation principle, which states that two tournaments must pass before a continental confederation may host a World Cup again.

Since the upcoming finals will be hosted across three continents (South America, Europe, Africa) and the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia (Asia), there are only two options for 2038: North America and Oceania.

However, Hellmann does not want to rule out that the rotation principle will be relaxed in the future. "We would very much like to do that, and there is an initiative from Neuendorf and the DFB to bid for 2042, perhaps even 2038. It depends on FIFA's regulations."
