No Defeat in 96 Years
The streak began at the first edition of the tournament: in 1930, Argentina dismantled the USA 6-1. After 56 years, it was back to a semifinal in Mexico against Belgium, where Diego Maradona carried his team to a 2-0 victory with a brace.
In the meantime, the nation had indeed won its first World Cup, but due to a different tournament format (two group stages), there was no semifinal.
In 1990 against Italy (4-3) and in 2014 against the Netherlands (4-2), they secured their place in the final only after a penalty shootout. It was much clearer at the last World Cup in 2022, when Argentina beat Croatia 3-0.
