Ilzer protégé hits out at Nagelsmann: "That was unbelievable"

Oliver Baumann has not had an easy time with the DFB team.

The goalkeeper was still planned as the number one for the World Cup in spring, but then-Germany national coach Julian Nagelsmann changed his mind shortly before the tournament.

Nagelsmann convinced Manuel Neuer to make a comeback in the DFB jersey, and so the Bayern custodian travelled to the tournament in the USA as the starting goalkeeper. Baumann had to settle for being number two.

"Hurt significantly more"

Now, the Ilzer protégé speaks about being left out at that time. "How that went down, that was unbelievable," Baumann tells RTL.

The 35-year-old is no longer even in Jürgen Klopp's first DFB squad.

Nevertheless, for him it's clear: "I have to be honest: What happened in the summer hurt significantly more."

Baumann still "top fit"

Because Baumann had known for some time that he wouldn't be included this time.

"I've known it for a while, but I have to accept the decision, even if I don't like it. They are taking a different path," says the goalkeeper.

Nevertheless, he does not see it as the end of his national team career: "I feel top fit, no matter how old I am. I can only say: If he needs me, then I'll be there - and if not, then I have to accept it."
