Heated Duel Ireland vs. Israel Ends in Draw
Neither team can secure a win on neutral ground. Austria thus remains the clear group leader.
Ireland and Israel draw 1-1 in front of empty stands, but still in a heated atmosphere.
In Austria's UEFA Nations League group, none of the four teams can win on Sunday evening. Due to political tensions, Ireland's home game is not taking place in Dublin, but on neutral ground in Serbia.
Ireland Starts Better
The match was particularly politically charged beforehand. During the coin toss, Ireland captain Caoimhin Kelleher refused to shake hands with his counterpart Dor Peretz.
At the start of the game, Ireland was the stronger team. In the 22nd minute, Molumby had the first big chance, firing a low shot just past the post.
In the 36th minute, there were strong protests from the Irish players. Dor Peretz committed a tough tackle against Dunne in the penalty area. Only after a VAR check was a penalty awarded to the Irish. Troy Parrott converted to make it 1-0, scoring for the fourth time during this international break (39.).
Fortunate Equalizer
After the break, Israel scored an early, fortunate equalizer. A shot from former Salzburg player Gloukh found its way to Dor Peretz via deflections, who made amends for his penalty foul and tapped in the 1-1 equalizer.
Israel even nearly took the lead, but substitute Gandelmann's shot rebounded off the right post.
With this result, Israel remains last in the group with two points. Ireland stays in striking distance in third place with a total of five points. Austria leads the group with eight points.
