VAR Revolution? UEFA wants to "step back somewhat"

"We are no longer satisfied with this type of VAR usage. We want to step back somewhat and put the referees back in the center," says Head of Refereeing Roberto Rosetti.

During the presentation of "Clear Line," a new online platform, he speaks about wanting clear guidelines for the use of VAR.

The platform offers 150 reference scenes, which are intended to make referee decisions viewable and understandable.

"It's football, not PlayStation."

The VAR should, in the future, only intervene "in clear and obvious situations" again, explains the Italian at a press event.

For a while, the development had moved towards more and more interventions, but one must be very careful. "It's not about a second chance for the referee. It's football, not PlayStation," says Rosetti.

In the 2nd round of the Admiral Bundesliga, there was renewed commotion surrounding VAR. In the match between Austria Wien and LASK Linz, Austria's 1-0 goal was disallowed due to a marginal offside. The intervention lasted several minutes.

Here too, Head of Refereeing Rosetti has a clear opinion. Any review that lasts longer than 90 seconds carries the risk "of losing credibility," says the 58-year-old.

Lukas Hinterseer also struggled with the VAR. A potential penalty was overturned by the video referee.
