After Foul: Serious Ankle Injury for Real Captain Valverde
The 28-year-old was able to finish the Madrid derby but is expected to miss upcoming matches.
The Madrid derby, in which Atletico Madrid prevailed 2-1 against Real Madrid, continues to make headlines.
As the "Royals" announced in a statement, captain Federico Valverde suffered a serious injury to his left ankle. "Valverde will undergo further examinations in the coming hours," the club wrote. A precise duration of absence is not yet known.
Sharp Criticism of the Referee
The Uruguayan midfielder likely sustained the injury during the foul by Kang-in Lee. The Atletico attacking player escaped without a card after the rough tackle.
After the defeat, Real Madrid sharply criticized the officials led by referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias. "A catastrophic refereeing performance decided the derby," the "Royals" wrote on their website.
"Those were clear red cards. The poor referee, Ortiz, obviously cannot withstand the pressure in games like these," said Real coach Jose Mourinho at the post-match press conference.
