Gündogan frustrated by bench role: "Why should I be ready?"
For years, he was a regular starter in Dortmund, Manchester, and Barcelona. At Galatasaray, however, Ilkay Gündogan only has a fixed spot on the bench.
For years, Ilkay Gündogan was considered one of the best midfielders in the world. The now 35-year-old celebrated numerous successes with Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, and FC Barcelona.
However, he has barely played a role at his current club, Galatasaray Istanbul, so far. Since the 2025/26 season, Gündogan has been wearing the jersey of the traditional Turkish club – but currently, it's only the substitute's bib.
This season, the German has only accumulated eleven minutes of playing time under coach Okan Buruk: six in the league and five in the UEFA Champions League.
"I'm not playing!"
After the 3-1 victory in the Süper Lig against Kasimpasa, where Gündogan remained on the bench for the entire match, he was asked about the Champions League clash with his former club FC Barcelona and whether he felt ready for it.
"I'm not playing – so why should I be ready?" replied the midfielder, visibly annoyed.
The clear statement sparked discussion in the Turkish media and among fans.
Chance for more playing time
The 82-cap German international currently finds himself behind Lemina, Gabriel Sara, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Lucas Torreira in midfield.
However, since Ugochukwu and Torreira are suspended for the next league match, Gündogan could soon get more playing time.
Galatasaray currently leads the Turkish Süper Lig with 16 points from seven games. In the Champions League, however, the club is still awaiting its first points.
