Querfeld continues to face reserve role at Union Berlin
The Austrian international is currently not first choice under new coach Lustrinelli. Ahead of the match against Borussia Dortmund, little suggests a return to the starting XI.
Leopold Querfeld continues to fight for his place in the central defence at Union Berlin.
Ahead of Saturday's home match against Borussia Dortmund (3:30 PM in the LIVE-Ticker), little suggests that the 22-year-old will return to the starting XI.
Coach opts for continuity
New coach Mauro Lustrinelli wants to change as little as possible after the recent success against SV Elversberg. "We won't make many changes in the next game, that's clear," the Swiss announced at Friday's press conference.
There are also likely to be no changes in central defence. Summer new signings Felix Uduokhai and Zeno van den Bosch recently impressed in the heart of the defence. "They did very well. They fit together very well," Lustrinelli praised the duo.
Querfeld was supposed to become defensive leader
For Querfeld, who was actually supposed to take on a central role in the Union defence after the departures of Diogo Leite and Danilho Doekhi, this development is a massive setback. After all, the Austrian international, with a market value of 17 million euros, is on paper the most valuable player in the Berlin squad.
This season, the former Rapid player has been in the starting XI three times but could not convince defensively. In the first league win against Elversberg, Querfeld was on the bench – Union kept a clean sheet for the first time.
