Leipzig Veteran's Transfer Collapses at the Last Second
Willi Orban was practically on his way to a new club before RB Leipzig still blocked his transfer.
A last-second transfer at RB Leipzig has been prevented.
As "Sky" reports, central defender Willi Orban, who had captained the "Bulls" for several years, was on the verge of a move to Saudi Arabian promoted side Al-Diriyah.
According to the report, everything was clear between the clubs and with the player himself; even the medical check had already been scheduled for this Monday, which is why the team doctor of the club from a suburb of the capital Riyadh had flown to Germany.
Injury Changed the Situation
But then came the news that new central defender Abdoul Kone had suffered a shoulder injury and would be out for several weeks. Following this, Leipzig withdrew their release, and Orban must remain in Saxony for the time being.
Reportedly, the Hungarian international was open to staying, stating he could envision another season in Leipzig. The 33-year-old's contract runs until 2027.
Orban has been a long-standing regular player in Leipzig, playing for the "Bulls" since 2015 and making 385 competitive appearances, scoring 36 goals and providing 12 assists despite his central defender position.
He served as captain from 2017 to 2020 and again from 2023 to 2025; the Hungarian was also a regular starter last season.
