"Sign of Consistency": Dortmund Extends with Coach Kovac
Dortmund sticks with their coach and extends the collaboration ahead of schedule.
Borussia Dortmund and Niko Kovac are extending their collaboration ahead of schedule!
As announced on Tuesday morning, the head coach of the Black & Yellows signs a new contract valid until summer 2029. Originally, his contract would have expired at the end of the season.
"With Niko Kovac, we have been on a very good path since he took office a little over a year and a half ago. He has consistently developed the team and enjoys a high level of acceptance within our club. The extension with Niko is also a clear sign of consistency and stability at Borussia Dortmund. And Niko also knows what he has in Borussia Dortmund. That's why we quickly agreed to continue on this path together," says Sporting Director Lars Ricken.
With the 54-year-old, his two assistant coaches Robert Kovac and Filip Tapalovic also remain on board.
Fifth-Highest Points Haul in History
Kovac has been in office since February 2025. In the 2024/25 season, he led Marcel Sabitzer, Carney Chukwuemeka and co. from eleventh to fourth place in the table. Last season, they became vice-champions and collected 73 points, the fifth-most in the club's history.
Sporting Director Ole Book is quoted as follows: "Since my first day here, a trusting cooperation has developed between Niko and me. Niko works extremely meticulously and radiates a calmness through his experience that benefits our team. We are in almost daily exchange and are working on taking the next steps with the team to be successful with BVB."
Best Points Average of All BVB Coaches
His points average also speaks for Kovac. In 53 games in the German Bundesliga to date, he has collected 114 points, resulting in an average of 2.14 points. No BVB coach has ever achieved more.
Things are also going well for Dortmund this season: After five matchdays, they are undefeated, have 13 points along with Freiburg, and are therefore at the top of the table.
"Together, we have initiated a clear development and laid important foundations for the future. We want to build on that. We have a clear idea of how we want to play football, how we want to perform as a team, and what it takes to achieve our goals," says Kovac.
He continues: "It is crucial that we do not rest on our laurels, but rather work every day to get better. We see great potential and are convinced that together, with full conviction and great determination, we can achieve a lot more."
