World Cup Spectator Grüll: "Last Season Wasn't Good Enough for Me"
He followed the finals as a spectator. This season, Marco Grüll is consistently racking up scorer points - and thus wants to keep making it difficult for Ralf Rangnick.
Austrian international Marco Grüll is having an impressive season so far at Werder Bremen: His interim record is eight scorer points (two goals, six assists) in six appearances this season.
Recently, he was rewarded by head coach Ralf Rangnick with a return to the ÖFB team and immediately started in the first Nations League match against Israel, and came on as a substitute for almost half an hour in the final clash with Kosovo.
Rangnick's Explanation "Wouldn't Have Changed Anything"
Grüll would have also liked to go to the World Cup in the summer: "Of course, I would have liked to be there. Every player dreams of being part of a World Cup," he says in a recent interview with "Deichstube." However, the attacking player did not find a place in Rangnick's selection. "That certainly wasn't nice," confirms the 28-year-old.
However, he shows understanding for the decision: "Last season simply wasn't good enough for me." Rangnick didn't even have to explain his decision in detail, Grüll says. "Because it wouldn't have changed anything about the situation; I wasn't there," he explains.
Grüll Wants to "Keep Pushing"
The fact that he didn't get any more playing time after his 45-minute starting XI appearance against Israel in the two subsequent games (Kosovo and Ireland) naturally didn't please him: "Every player wants to play." But for him, it's clear: "I will keep pushing and try to perform. Maybe next time I'll get more playing time."
This has ultimately worked out perfectly for his club Werder Bremen this season. On Saturday afternoon, Grüll can provide further arguments for head coach Rangnick in the home match against Paderborn (from 3:30 PM in the LIVE ticker>>>).
