Leverkusen captain told to find new club
Although the 31-year-old is still under contract until 2028, the "Werkself" reportedly suggested he depart.
Robert Andrich could surprisingly leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer. As reported by "kicker", the "Werkself" reportedly suggested a move to the 31-year-old.
The German international still has a contract in Leverkusen until 2028. Since his move from Union Berlin in summer 2021, Andrich has made 199 competitive appearances for the German Bundesliga club, scoring 21 goals and providing 14 assists.
From Leverkusen Captain to the Sidelines
The development is particularly surprising because Andrich was only appointed captain of Leverkusen last season. Additionally, the defensive midfielder celebrated the greatest success in the club's recent history with the "Werkself" in 2024.
Under Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen sensationally won the German Championship and the DFB-Pokal. Andrich was an important part of the team that remained undefeated in the Bundesliga throughout the entire season.
The Potsdam native also recommended himself for the German national team through his performances in Leverkusen. Between 2023 and 2025, Andrich made 19 international appearances for the DFB team.
New Coach Favors Others
Now, however, his situation seems to have fundamentally changed. Under new coach Carles Martinez, Andrich is unlikely to play a major role.
The reason for this apparently also lies in the Spaniard's tactical approach. While Andrich was primarily used as a central defender in a back three last season, Martinez is reportedly planning to revert to a back four.
This would cause Andrich to lose his recently important defensive role. Furthermore, Leverkusen has already signed a promising talent for the defensive midfield this summer in 17-year-old Kennet Eichhorn from Hertha BSC.
