What's next for Marco Grüll?

Since summer 2024, the Salzburg native (28) has been under contract with SV Werder Bremen.

However, the eight-time Austrian national team player doesn't seem to have fully settled in with the Hanseaten in his first two seasons in the German top flight.

Last season, Grüll made 33 appearances, but only recorded three goals and one assist.

No Turkey Move

According to an interview with "DeichStube," Werder is still counting on the former Ried and Rapid attacker.

Recently, there were speculations about a move to Samsunspor in the Turkish Süper Lig.

Peter Niemeyer, Head of Professional Football for the "Werderaner": "I don't see that happening at the moment; we are planning with him."

Grüll is "always good for goals and assists, and when he's needed, he's always there for the team."

Grüll as Right-Back?

Even more interesting: Grüll could take on an unforeseen role under coach Daniel Thioune. As Niemeyer hints, Grüll is an option for the right side of defense. Just like talent Mick Schmetgens, the natural attacking player "can fulfill the requirements for this position well."

Grüll had already caused problems for the now Real Madrid star Yan Diomande last season. "I still remember well how strongly he defended against Diomandé in Leipzig last season."

The two regular right-backs, Felix Agu and Mitchell Weiser, are out injured or are still in rehabilitation training.

The Bremen side, who presented former DFB national team player Niclas Füllkrug as a prominent new arrival on Monday, will kick off their 2026/27 season on Saturday in the DFB-Pokal against Hansa Lüneburg.
