What frustrates Adi Hütter after the squandered win against Union

Adi Hütter missed out on a perfect start to the season in his Bundesliga comeback as coach of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Eintracht already led 3-1 against 1. FC Union Berlin on the first matchday, but had to settle for a 3-3 draw after a late equalizer from Tim Skarke (to the match report >>>).

The Austrian coach's frustration was accordingly great. "If you're leading 3-1, you have to see it over the finish line. We didn't manage that," Hütter said in a "Sky" interview.

Hütter: "We didn't see our game through"

The 56-year-old nevertheless viewed his team's performance as largely positive. Frankfurt played "very decently" for 75 minutes, but Union also caused problems with many long balls.

Especially after the break, Eintracht increasingly lost control, according to Hütter. "What bothered me was that we didn't utilize the counter-attacking situations effectively and that we didn't get the game under control on the other side."

Therefore, his conclusion is critical despite earning a point: "We didn't see our game through, and that's what annoys me the most."

The two goals conceded from set pieces also concerned the coach. Eintracht had worked on these situations during the week but did not have the tallest squad. Additionally, several young or inexperienced players like Jeremiah Maluze, Keita Kosugi, and Elias Baum were in defense.

"One has to say that we did it very decently for that, but not well enough," said Hütter.

Praise for hat-trick scorer Ebnoutalib

There was still a bright spot for Hütter: Younes Ebnoutalib had a dream day and scored all three Frankfurt goals.

"You couldn't wish for a better start as a Bundesliga striker," Hütter raved. The attacker also "works incredibly hard for the team."

Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, who was signed on loan from SC Freiburg just a few days ago, also received special praise from the coach.

Querfeld: From blame to redemption

On the part of the Berliners, Leopold Querfeld, meanwhile, experienced an emotional rollercoaster.

The Austrian legionnaire initially caused Frankfurt's lead with a fateful error. After the kickoff, the 22-year-old miscontrolled the ball, Ebnoutalib intervened and scored to make it 2-1.

"That shouldn't happen. I also felt extremely sorry for the team," Querfeld openly admitted in a "Sky" interview.

However, the central defender impressively rectified his mistake. In the 79th minute, he headed in Union's goal to make it 2-3 and also set up Skarke's equalizer in stoppage time.

"I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me," Querfeld explained. "But such mistakes simply shouldn't happen."

The fact that he still secured a point for his team with a goal and an assist was all the more satisfying. "That a goal and an assist then succeed is, of course, a bonus. I'm very, very happy that I could give something back to the team after all."

Union draws courage from comeback

Querfeld particularly highlighted his team's morale. Despite trailing 1-3, Union believed in a turnaround until the very end.

"I believe there are also teams that would collapse after such a goal. We believed until the very end and, of course, also had a stadium that carried us," said the Austrian.

Both teams will continue their Bundesliga campaigns next weekend: Union will visit Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, while Frankfurt will host FC Augsburg on Sunday.
