Toni Kroos Names His Ballon d'Or Favorite
Two months before the Ballon d'Or award ceremony, Toni Kroos has decided on his personal favorite.
Who will win the Ballon d'Or in 2026? Approximately two months before the award ceremony, Toni Kroos has already made his decision.
The former German international names PSG star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as his favorite for the prestigious award. The 25-year-old Georgian's outstanding club season is a major factor in his favor.
"He probably won't win, but he is undoubtedly number one," Kroos explains about Kvaratskhelia.
Kvaratskhelia Impresses with PSG
Kvaratskhelia won both the French championship and the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive time with Paris Saint-Germain. Especially in Europe's premier club competition, the winger excelled and was voted the Champions League Player of the Season.
In total, "Kvaradona" contributed to 32 goals in 55 competitive matches last season.
For Kroos, the Georgian's performance at club level is particularly decisive. "Kvara was the best player of currently the best club in the world," said the former Real star.
Kroos Sees World Cup Stars at a Disadvantage
However, a crucial factor works against Kvaratskhelia: The World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico took place without him.
The PSG star missed qualification for the finals with the Georgian national team. Especially in a World Cup year, this is considered a significant disadvantage in the race for the Ballon d'Or.
However, Kroos also sees weaknesses in some World Cup stars during the past club season. "The best players of the World Cup – Messi, Bellingham, Mbappé, Rodri – had average club seasons," states the 36-year-old.
In the history of the award, no player has ever won the Ballon d'Or in a World Cup year despite not participating in the World Cup. While Karim Benzema was awarded in 2022 despite the French striker missing the World Cup, that particular vote took place approximately one month before the start of the finals.
Whether Kvaratskhelia can overcome this historical hurdle will become clear on October 26th. That's when the 2026 Ballon d'Or will be awarded in London.
