Jesper Lindström is a Europa League winner, an 18-time Danish international, and has played in the German Bundesliga, Serie A, and also in the Premier League.

The fact that the 26-year-old, now in the prime of his footballing career, signed in Austria is proof enough that not everything went as desired in recent years of his career.

"They were very difficult years for me. I was often injured, played little. Now I'm building myself up, I'm almost back to 100 percent," said the new signing of FC Red Bull Salzburg.

Brutally long dry spell

Lindström moved to Salzburg shortly before the end of the summer transfer window, but is still waiting for his first goal involvement in the Red Bulls' kit.

Overall, the right winger hasn't been lucky in front of goal in the recent past. He scored his last competitive goal on January 21, 2023, in a German Bundesliga match against Schalke 04. That was 1,305 days ago.

During this time, Lindström was plagued by many injuries, managing to play a total of only 96 competitive matches in the last three and a half years.

Such a dry spell is "naturally difficult, but mentally I'm okay," said the Dane, who works with a mental coach.

Against Milan, it was almost there

He tries not to put too much pressure on himself, but to think from action to action: "It's about always continuing. And that's exactly what I'm doing."

Ich will einen Impact haben, will Tore und Assists sammeln.

On Thursday, in the Europa League thrashing against AC Milan (Match report>>>), it was almost there again: Shortly after the half-time break, "Rossoneri" midfielder Ardon Jashari, under pressure, played a back pass towards his own six-yard box. Lindström darted in and immediately went for goal, but of all people, former "Bull" Strahinja Pavlovic prevented the goal with a superb tackle.

"I asked him afterwards how he managed to block the shot," Lindström joked after the match. With a more serious expression, he added: "He gives everything, and maybe that's what we also need: to give everything in every duel, in every pass, in every shot. Football is a game of mentality."

The search for impact

The strong-pressing attacking player knows this best himself. A small success, even if it's just an assist, and the mental block could finally be broken.

Against Milan, he tried a long-range shot or two in the second half, but didn't even get close to Mike Maignan's goal. Lindström added: "If you don't try, you won't score."

His own expectation is: "I want to have an impact, I want to score goals and collect assists."

Napoli once paid 30 million Euros

Lindström said he was well received in Salzburg: "The team, the staff, the city are great. I feel very comfortable."

The "Bulls" initially loaned the right-footed player for one season from SSC Napoli, after which there is a purchase option of three million Euros. The Neapolitans paid 30 million Euros for him three years ago.
