Heavy rain began in Wals-Siezenheim shortly before kick-off, and the match was affected by the weather conditions from the start. Hardly a pass found its intended recipient, and dribbling quickly became impossible.
After 15 minutes, referee Damian Sylwestrzak pulled the plug and sent both teams to the dressing rooms.
For a long time, it remained unclear whether the game could be continued on Thursday. Referee Sylwestrzak and his team entered the pitch every 30 minutes to test the conditions.
Ultimately, the Polish officiating team concluded that football could still be played. The resumption of the clash is scheduled for 9:15 PM.
A postponement would have been extremely inconvenient for Salzburg due to organizational reasons. Next Wednesday, the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa will take place at the Red Bull Arena.
