Austria not just satisfied: "Let up a touch too much"

Wiener Austria can celebrate right at the start of the new season. In Jumara, Latvia, the "Violets" won the first leg of the 2nd qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League 2-0 against FK Liepaja (To the match report>>>).

"In terms of the game's progression, the goal really did us good. For me, it's just a huge feeling that it worked out like this. I extremely enjoyed it," the 23-year-old said happily.

Regarding the course of the game, the midfielder says: "I think we made it a bit difficult for ourselves. We didn't let the ball flow."

Nevertheless, Austria also managed a second goal, and again a debut scorer could celebrate.

"We Were Clearly the Better Team"

This time Moritz Wels scored, who was allowed to play for Austria in a European competition for the first time after a one-year loan spell at WSG Tirol.

Despite a sometimes difficult game, he sees a deserved victory: "Today we were clearly the better team. Especially in the second half, we were superior and could have scored one or two more goals."

Coach Stephan Helm is also satisfied, but still had some criticism.

"Throughout the game, we allowed a touch too much. Nevertheless, there are positive aspects that we can take with us. It was a solid, focused performance," Helm says.

Ahead of the second leg next Thursday, he sees himself well-prepared: "Basically, I think we have created a good starting position for the return leg."
