Thanks to Wustinger and Wels: Austria starts with a win in Latvia

Austria Wien starts the new season with a win.

In the first leg of the 2nd round of UEFA Conference League qualification, the Violets win 2-0 in Latvia against FK Liepaja.

Austria started the match well and showed activity in the opening minutes, but without becoming clinical enough.

As the match progressed, they increasingly lost control, and Liepaja repeatedly posed a threat in front of goal.

In the 31st minute, the Viennese were awarded a free-kick. Eggestein chipped the ball into the penalty area to Fischer, who laid it off to Wustinger, who then scored the somewhat surprising opener from a turn.

Eggestein then had another good opportunity, but Austria still went into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

Substitute Wels makes an impact

At half-time, Stephan Helm made two changes. Dragovic and Wels came into the game, and the latter also had Vienna's first chance of the second half, but his shot went just wide of the goal.

Shortly after, the returning loanee did better. After a cross from Markovic, Eggestein laid the ball off to Wels. He failed with his first shot, but with his second attempt, he found the bottom left corner (55').

In the final phase, Schablas then had a great opportunity, but the winger's shot was blocked by teammate Hettwer. Ultimately, Austria celebrated a 2-0 victory.
