He's set to replace the injured Salzburg captain
Nikolas Veratschnig sustained a right knee injury during the ÖFB training camp. A duo now sees their chance. Coach Danny Röhl likely has a clear favorite.
In the home game against Kosovo, Salzburg players Christian Zawieschitzky and Nikolas Veratschnig celebrated their debut for the ÖFB team. However, due to injury, it remained their only appearance in this training camp.
While the Mozartstädter's regular goalkeeper is already back on the training pitch, captain Veratschnig will be out for "several weeks" according to club information. A painful absence for coach Danny Röhl, who has relied exclusively on the 24-year-old so far.
Now, according to the head coach of the Mozartstädter, a "new situation" has arisen. "One or the other will have the opportunity to play more," the 37-year-old German is quoted by "Krone." He has two options in Leandro Morgalla and Stefan Lainer.
Röhl: "We have a player who is ready now"
Morgalla currently seems to have the upper hand in the internal competition, as Röhl revealed to "Krone": "With Leo, we have a player who is ready now and was clearly the number two (behind Veratschnig, Ed. note) in recent weeks." The defensive all-rounder is currently still with the German U21 squad.
That's also why Stefan Lainer was deployed in the test match against FC Blau-Weiß Linz. Danny Röhl particularly emphasized his professional attitude: "He has done an excellent job in recent weeks, even though it wasn't always easy not to even be in the squad. I'm glad he's with us."
Röhl left it open as to who would ultimately get the nod. Rather, the coach said, they would evaluate the situation from game to game. Therefore, changes in this position could also occur depending on the opponent.
