Ronaldo to Rapid? What's behind the donation posters
Since the start of the week, posters appealing for donations for a Ronaldo transfer have appeared in Vienna. Now it's known who is behind it and why it's a good cause.
A poster supposedly calling for donations for a transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to SK Rapid has caused a stir in recent days.
A poster several meters long can also be seen in the immediate vicinity of the stadium in Vienna-Hütteldorf. It reads: "Meaning of Life – For Ronaldo. Green-White donates. Join in!" Next to it is a QR code.
Now it's clear: The Austrian Red Cross is behind the campaign. The reference is not to the Portuguese football star, but to an ambulance driver of the same name from Rwanda.
Support for the expansion of emergency medical services
On its own website, the Red Cross explains: "We are, of course, thinking of 'our' Ronaldo from Rwanda, who has found his purpose in life as an ambulance driver! Accidents, births, or serious illnesses – in many regions of East Africa, hospitals are far away and roads are poor. Often, a safe transfer determines whether people receive medical help. The Austrian Red Cross supports Ronaldo and his colleagues in establishing and expanding an emergency medical service."
"We help with the training and further education of staff, the equipping of existing ambulances, and the procurement of new vehicles."
"This transfer can save lives – please help us!" it concludes.
