Behounek takes a dig at Renner and Silberberger
The WAC defender really lashes out after the defeat against Hartberg. Manfred Schmid emphasizes that he is no magician.
Game one under new coach Manfred Schmid was narrowly lost for WAC away at TSV Hartberg!
The Wolfsbergers had to concede a late 0:1 defeat due to a goal by Konstantin Schopp. Especially in the first half, they showed significant improvement, at least defensively. To the match report >>>
Behounek lashes out
How tough the last weeks in Lavanttal were became evident in Raffael Behounek's "Sky" interview. The center-back lashed out at both former teammate Rene Renner and coach Thomas Silberberger.
When asked if the left-back would currently be missed by the team, he replied dryly: "Not one bit, no. I'll leave it at that, but he's not missed one bit. I don't want to say anything more about it."
He was apparently also dissatisfied with his ex-coach, especially because of his positioning on the field. Schmid has now moved him from right to center: "I've never played anywhere else. It really surprised me that I was floating around on the right side. That's why I'm happy to play in the center again. The way we play, being more compact, also suits the team better."
"I'm a football coach, not a magician"
Even though WAC again left empty-handed in Schmid's comeback, positives can still be taken from the performance.
"We can be satisfied with the first half; in the second half, we were just passengers. That's a mental issue when you've been without a success for so long. Something like that takes time. I'm a football coach, not a magician. But I know there's a lot to do," said the new head coach.
Behounek saw it similarly: "At least we didn't concede three or four goals. The clean sheet held for a long time. Especially in the first half, we allowed little, and with a bit of luck, one will go in."
The way out of the crisis
Now it's about continuing to work and restoring the missing self-confidence through positive results.
"That only works through joint hard work. We need training, want to play with more courage, and then I'm convinced that we can change something," Schmid stated, setting the direction.
In Lavanttal, they remain optimistic in any case: "It makes me positive, though. That was a rock-solid performance from back to front, and that's what's needed to survive in the league," said Behounek.
Next opponent is second-tier team Hertha Wels in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup. In the league, they host SK Sturm Graz on Sunday.
