Two set pieces helped Rapid to victory against WAC. According to Hoff Thorup, that was no coincidence.

Rapid capitalizes on Salzburg's "slip-up" against SV Ried and moves up to second place in the table with a 3-0 victory against WAC (for the match report >>>).

Two set pieces secured the win for the Viennese: "We've been working on that since the start of the season," explains coach Hoff Thorup in a "Sky" interview.

Especially in the first half, WAC defended deep and offered the Green-Whites few chances from open play. According to the coach, they were somewhat surprised by the opponent's style of play.

In the 13th minute, Raux-Yao scored the opener from a free-kick. The goal scorer later explained that they, like every team, had practiced exactly such situations in training.

Piesinger criticizes himself despite controversial situation

Cvetkovic added a goal before halftime from a controversial corner (35'). Piesinger and his teammates were very angry afterward, yet he also sees mistakes from WAC: "One must also say, we defended it poorly."

After the second goal, the plan was somewhat discarded. "In the second half, we tried to come back again, we almost succeeded," he adds.

Teammate Verhounig, who barely saw the ball in the first 45 minutes, also laments his missed chance in the 56th minute. "With a goal, something would have been possible again," he emphasizes. "Nevertheless, we were able to keep up well after the restart."

Instead, they conceded the third goal in the 82nd minute. Dahl sealed the game and also convinced his coach: "We want to score goals like that," he explains.

WAC coach Silberberger, on the other hand, is not satisfied. "The result is a bit too high. We didn't concede anything from open play, the two set pieces were cheap because we trained that all week."

Rapid celebrates "hard-fought victory"

Rapid captain Seidl speaks of a "hard-fought victory" after the three points won. "The first half was very decent, we scored the goals from set pieces. If it doesn't work out from open play sometimes, set pieces can be very game-deciding," analyzes the Salzburg native.

In the second half, however, they only showed an "average performance." Especially forward attacks didn't happen as often, and they let WAC come forward more. Nevertheless, the visitors celebrated a particularly important victory, even if it wasn't "our best game."

"We are where we want to be in the table"

In the table, they move up to second place. "We are where we want to be, at the top, but for me, it's more about the team's development," says the coach. Seidl is also aware that a lot can still happen after six games. "You have to perform consistently throughout the season."

WAC, however, is only in tenth place. "We started the season well, but then unfortunately missed two or three games. Of course, it's annoying now, but we have to get back to the beginning as quickly as possible," says Verhounig.

Piesinger also speaks of a "difficult situation." Above all, cheap goals conceded must be avoided in the future. The next chance awaits in the next round against SV Ried.
