WAC at the Bottom of the Table: "Currently not fit for the Bundesliga!"
WAC takes the Red Lantern after seven winless Bundesliga matches. Coach Thomas Silberberger openly criticizes his team.
The international break did not bring the hoped-for turnaround for Wolfsberger AC.
After the 0-3 defeat to SCR Altach, the Carinthians have now been waiting for a win for seven Bundesliga matches (match report >>>). With only five points, Thomas Silberberger's team slips to the bottom of the table. In addition, WAC now has the weakest defense in the league with 16 goals conceded.
"If you saw the game, you'd have to confirm it," Silberberger said on "Sky" when asked about his team's lack of Bundesliga suitability. The coach had explicitly warned his players against another false start.
"We defend catastrophically"
Indeed, WAC was already 0-2 down after just 13 minutes. "We warned ourselves not to sleep through the opening phase, and then, after what felt like four minutes, you're 0-1 down again due to a blatant individual error," Silberberger fumed. The third goal conceded after the break also originated from an individual error.
For WAC player Dominik Fitz, the situation is now alarming: "As a team, we're defending truly catastrophically, and one has to say quite honestly, that is currently not fit for the Bundesliga."
The renewed red card – captain Simon Piesinger had to leave the field in the 44th minute – also fits the picture. It is already the third dismissal for the Wolfsbergers this season.
"We're doing a lot wrong right now; we also don't have the luck of getting a penalty called for us. Then we miss again at the back, get a red card. These are all things that simply shouldn't happen," Fitz explained.
Silberberger is at a loss
How WAC is supposed to find its way out of the crisis is still unclear to the coach immediately after the final whistle. "Three weeks ago, after the game against Ried, harsh words were exchanged in the changing room. I don't know yet how I'm going to approach it now," Silberberger admitted.
However, there isn't much time left for contemplation. This coming Sunday, the Carinthians will host WSG Tirol. "We will need a reaction," demanded the coach.
Altach draws new hope
On the other side, there is relief after the second win of the season. Double scorer Ousmane Diawara hopes for the start of a trend reversal: "Yes, I think so," the striker replied when asked if the success could be the start of a turnaround.
Benjamin Böckle also expressed relief: "It naturally feels incredibly good after so many winless matches that we finally put in a performance today."
