Draw! Salzburg frustrated by WAC keeper Polster
The Bulls had a clear advantage in chances, but in the end, the clearly better goalkeeper on the day ensured that WAC secured a point.
FC Red Bull Salzburg drops points for the first time in the second round of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga. Against Wolfsberger AC, the Bulls only manage a 1-1 draw despite having better chances.
After a rather quiet opening phase, the hosts had the first opportunity from a corner kick, with Aaron Sky Schwarz shooting wide left of the goal.
After about 20 minutes, Röhl's team took control of the game, Aboubacar Camara tested WAC goalkeeper Nikolas Polster on his Bundesliga debut, and two minutes later, Haris Tabakovic also failed to beat the ÖFB keeper.
The game continued in this vein. Tabakovic once again found his match in Polster, and the referee called offside. However, the replay showed that the Bosnian was likely not too far offside, meaning a goal should have counted.
Polster, time and again
WAC offered very little offensively during this phase; instead, Sota Kitano ran alone towards Polster, but then in an attempt to get around Polster, went too far left. The angle became too acute, and the chance was gone.
Immediately after, the WAC goalkeeper was tested again by a shot from Camara, deflecting it over the bar with a strong save. Only towards the end of the first half did Wolfsberg get back into the game, with Marco Schabauer chipping the ball volley over the goal.
After the break, the game continued with top chances for Salzburg and a strong Polster. First, a save against Karim Konate, then he denied Frans Krätzig, and after almost an hour, Konate and Damir Redzic again failed to score.
Zawieschitzky blunders
After the Bulls wanted a penalty following a running duel between Tabakovic and WAC defender Cheick Mamadou Diabate, but didn't get one after a VAR review, WAC scored out of nowhere.
Fabian Wohlmuth won the ball, then laid it off to Giacomo Vrioni, whose shot was actually quite central. However, Christian Zawieschitzky didn't look good here, making it 1-0 (67').
Salzburg forces the equalizer
After that, Salzburg continued to press, Tabakovic missed his first goal for Salzburg again, but finally, the spell was broken.
After a free-kick from Krätzig, Kevin Boma laid it across in front of goal to substitute Yorbe Vertessen, who bundled the ball over the line (79').
Subsequently, WAC defended Salzburg's attacks well and could therefore be happy with a fortunate point. For the Bulls, the draw was clearly not enough given the numerous chances.
In the table, both Wolfsberg and Salzburg thus remain on four points, occupying second and third place respectively.
