Despite Schwab's Goal: Rapid Takes Three Points from Ried
The ex-Rapid captain scores his first goal for SV Ried, ironically against his long-time former club. However, his temporary equalizer is not enough for their first win of the season.
SK Rapid secures a 2-1 away victory against SV Ried on the second matchday of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga.
Horn scores his debut goal for Rapid, and Haidara fires the Green-Whites to victory. For Ried, none other than ex-Rapid captain Schwab finds the net.
Early Lead Thanks to Horn's Debut Goal
Rapid started the match with more vigor and took an early lead. Ironically, Schwab extended a Bolla cross to Horn, who from the back of the box, buried his low shot precisely into the far corner (8'). It was only the German's second professional goal ever.
Few significant chances materialized for a long time thereafter. Demir's shot from around 14 meters narrowly missed (35'), and with the lead, Rapid repeatedly allowed small errors to creep in.
In the 41st minute, this was almost punished: Schwab was unchallenged outside the Rapid penalty area and unleashed a shot with his strong left foot. Rapid goalkeeper Hedl couldn't get to the shot, but the ball bounced off the underside of the crossbar and back into play.
Thus, at halftime, the narrow lead for the visitors from Vienna remained intact.
The "Ex" Equalizes Against Rapid
Immediately after the break, Kara pushed Adamson's pass wide of the goal when clean through on Ried keeper Leitner, squandering Rapid's best chance since the opening goal. Just three minutes later, Kara failed to convert his next big opportunity against Leitner (49').
On the other side, Demir's misplaced back-pass almost provided a clear scoring opportunity for Aisowieren, but Hedl once again managed to save against the Ried forward (52'). Meanwhile, Rapid's attacking efforts grew weaker, while Ried improved their play.
Ex-Rapid player Schwab scored the equalizer for SV Ried with a header in the 74th minute. Bajic, also formerly active in Hütteldorf, delivered the cross to the far post, and the veteran powerfully headed it in.
Rapid Responds Immediately
Rapid struck back immediately after the equalizer.
From a long clearance by Rapid keeper Hedl, Steurer overlooked Haidara sneaking in behind him. As a result, he was caught off guard by the Rapid attacker, and Haidara managed to score via the inside of the post, restoring the lead for the visitors from Vienna (77').
Because Hedl was able to save Ried's best chance through Rasner (84'), the narrow lead for Rapid remained until the final whistle.
With six points, the Hütteldorfer temporarily climb to the top of the table, while Ried is still waiting for their first Bundesliga win under new coach Mario Despotovic.
