After Foul Play and Handball Penalty: Sturm with Late Draw Against Ried
After a dream start, the Graz side weaken themselves with foul play and a handball. But substitute Beganovic secures a late equalizer.
Eventful match in Graz-Liebenau!
SK Sturm still manages to snatch a point against SV Ried thanks to a late goal from Beganovic. On Matchday 10, the clubs draw 2-2.
Sturm Rewarded for Good Start
The Graz side start well, almost pinning Ried back. The first chance comes as early as the 4th minute: A nice chip from Matoshi to Diakite, who almost scores again. But Leitner saves the shot.
The game continues in a similar vein, but Sturm only rewards themselves for their good start after about half an hour. Ried once again fails to clear a corner sufficiently. Seidl hooks the ball onto his stronger right foot and scores to make it 1-0 into the far corner (30'). This is already Seidl's ninth scorer point in his tenth Bundesliga game for Sturm.
Malic Sees Red, Ried Equalizes
Sturm has the game clearly under control until the strong Arjan Malic, who had been excellent until this point, makes a mistake. He hits Rhodes in the back with his elbow off the ball and is shown a straight red card by referee
Safak Barmaksiz after a VAR check for foul play.
And things get worse for SK Sturm: Hödl commits a handball in his own penalty area. A penalty is awarded to Ried. Pomer steps up, sends Helac the wrong way, and secures the equalizer before half-time (45'+4')!
Ried Turns the Game Around
At the start of the second half, a completely contrasting picture emerges compared to the first half. Ried dictates the play and takes the lead in the 55th minute. Rossdorfer makes a strong run, leaving several opponents in his wake on the right side.
In the middle, Stankovic doesn't get into the aerial duel with Kiese Thelin, who heads the ball into the net to give them the lead.
Substitute Strikes Late
Subsequently, the match becomes a battle. Ried largely keeps Sturm away from their own goal. It seems as if the Innviertlers would see out the victory.
But then Beganovic strikes after all: After strong interplay between the also substituted Halwachs and Hödl, the latter brings the ball into the middle, where Beganovic puts the ball into the goal with the help of the crossbar.
Ried thus does not manage their first win against Sturm since 2016. After three consecutive victories, the Despotovic XI only manages a draw. Sturm had also won their last three competitive matches.
